Aloriah: Midgard Progress Update #5

Things were going well. Given there were no further attacks from Ragnarök, I proceeded to step up my scenario points farming, and broke the 2000 scenario points mark. Here are the rewards I got:

However, as much as I farmed, Draak from Ragnarök blew past me in the scenario points farm stakes. Seemed like he had a lot more uber units and was farming an an alarmingly high rate to me. There was no way I could match him now.

I then decided to expand to Molten Ashlands as soon as possible, upgrading my council halls to get the required 50 civilization points and training 25 settlers. I sent off 8k berserkers and 500 trolls to escort my settlers but there was really no need. I ported into close to my settling spot and there was no mobs on the way. All that scouting (of portal stones) previously proved to be useful.

My alliance (Romance Empire) were talking about the fact that Ragnarök was killing the Mother Dragon soon. We had to either kill the Mother Dragon first or attack them to slow them down. We were not ready to kill the Mother Dragon so our plans were to attack Ragnarök. I then went to bed (I am in Australia) and when I woke up, behold, there were the words of Ramdas:
As foretold in prophecy a day would come that would shake the very Earth to the core itself. On this day a force so big that the Mother Dragon and even the Gods shake in fear of its coming. This force will bring about the end of the world all villages will burn, all soldiers will die, and many of the Gods will parish. This force signifies the end of one world and the beginning of another. Midgard will be burned in ashes in this final epic battle but out of the ashes will raise a new world and a new age. This force has now challenged the Mother Dragon. Could the prophecy be happening? Is this the coming of……….. ………………………………………………Ragnarök
Prepare your Magicians and cast far sight on the Mother Dragon lair (Island/cave) because we are about to find out. Will the Mother Dragon and her minions prevail or will the day of Ragnarök come? All Yee others can only watch in anticipation as the prophecy approaches fruition.

Whilst I slept, Ragnarök killed the Mother Dragon and won the game round! If interested, here is a link to the final battle report:
http://midgard.aloriah.com/battlereport.php?id=68232

Big congratulations to Ragnarök! You won a lot quicker then I expected and certainly dominated Midgard. Bad luck to the rest of us. My final position on the scoreboard was 4th which is very respectable given it was my first game round. I am very competitive though, so of course, would have preferred to have finished higher. :)

I ended up with 1370 achievement points so I think I did well there:

I had a few plans which were cut short:
  • Engaging in more pvp, with counterattacks against Ragnarök. The only major battle was the time they attacked me, as mentioned in my last update.
  • Recruiting a Thief for my 5th hero and using that to steal key items.
  • Farming ancient ruins to see what they dropped. I was not able to get to any at all.
  • Building all of my buildings to level 10.
  • Exploring the rest of the world.

I had envisaged game rounds going for maybe 4-6 months. I think currently the Mother Dragon is too easy. I had thought you had to have maximum civilization sizes and armies before you could kill the Mother Dragon. Thus, I look forward to the future Mother Dragon changes to address this issue.

I did have a lot of fun though, it just felt like the fun ended too quickly. :( Anyhow, Midgard will reset soon and off we go again. I now understand the game a lot better and will be pushing a lot harder in game round #2. Here is a summary of lessons I learnt:
  • Focus should be on civilization build only with scenario points farming on the side. Once built up, you can catch up on scenario points quite easily.
  • Expand as fast as you can, take the risk! You do not need to send an overwhelming force with your settlers as you can just dodge mobs on the way. Once you establish a new village, the hero protective skill, wall, moat and towers will aid your village defense greatly.
  • It is a pve race to the Mother Dragon. Anything else slows you down.
  • I chose the evil alignment this round but I think good has more suitable uber units, so I will try good in game round #2.

Lord of Ultima: Mage/Frigate Naval Military City Layout

- This design is courtesy of Cfrs, a member of my alliance.

This is a Mage/Frigate Naval Military City Layout which you can see in the LoU Flash City Planner

Max Units: 160,000 mages and 360 frigates
Recruitment Speed: 8s mages and 35m:5s frigates
Storage: 1,575,000 wood/iron, 775,000 stone, 3,175,000 food
Food Consumption: 40,833 per hour (need to restock every 3.24 days)

In the end game, you will need to build naval military cities for cross-continent attacks. There are simply too many continents for you to invade.

As per my Food Management strategy, there is no food production in this type of castle as you want to maximize your TS (troop strength). Give you have to build supporting defense for naval castles, you want the biggest bang for your buck, and have to rely on shipping food in.

You may notice there are 9 cottages remaining. This castle will get counterattacked by your enemies and will take damage at times, so you want to be able to repair it in a timely fashion. If you do have construction speed research, you could consider dropping some cottages for more barracks or some food production.

For towers, I use:
  • Lookout Tower x2 to give 21 hours of attack advanced warning. I find 1 tower/11 hours is not enough.
  • Ballista Tower x22 definitely, to protect against naval counterattacks.

Set in the legendary Ultima universe, the game takes you to the new world of Caledonia, formed from the remains of Sosaria which was shattered into countless islands. You start your journey with a humble village which you grow over time into a mighty and prosperous capital. On your path to glory you will have to expand your power by creating additional cities, exploring new continents and forging a vast empire. You must master the art of diplomacy and trade as well as the military activities of spying, plundering, attacking and sieging enemy cities to finally become the mighty and feared Lord of Ultima."

Aloriah: Midgard Progress Update #4

I shall prevail, I mean I am still #1, barely:

War came to town! I think this was the first major war on Midgard. As expected, the Ragnarök alliance moved on me. Unprovoked I must say, I guess they wanted to slow me down. Here is an action shot of my piece of my neighbourhood in Dry Steppes crowded by armies belonging to Draak and Paintastic:

Too be honest, I was unprepared for the scale of army sizes. I had thought running around with three thousand Berserkers was uber but as you can see from the two following sample battle reports, army sizes are a lot bigger:

Basically, my little armies got smashed and smashed again! For three days and nights, Draak and Paintastic camped my poor neighbourhood, attacking my village every time their attack cool downs were reset. Coram (Warrior) was trapped in village defense and Moroose (Warrior) just stayed out dead. My defense army would get wiped out and I would have to retrain more units for the next attack. Thankfully, there are many things advantageous to the defender such as:
  • Hero Protective skill
  • Hero Resistance skill
  • Wall
  • Moat
  • Towers

They did not get anywhere close to destroying my village though, 94 happiness is the lowest that it got. I was also building my wall/moat/towers as much as I could. Over time, my total unit count crept up. Eventually, it got to the point whereby their loses was starting to match mine, so they pulled out. However, they had put me back by reducing my scenario point farming rate and stopping my Molten Ashlands expansion for now.

With the war over (for now), I have set about building a large military force and restarted my scenario point farming. I do have to keep a good lookout for Ragnarök forces to ensure they do not catch an army of mine out in the field with a superior force, so it is not as easy as before. By the way, one thing for Black Dragon farming is that you should have the bandit tactics skill and endeavour to fight on forest or mountain cells, so as to reduce the loses you take.

To be honest, I am still evaluating whether I should expand to Molten Ashlands early, as I am not sure the increased resource rate would match the resources consumed in defending your Molten Ashlands village and loss of the "Carrot on a Stick" buff. I think it may be better to use the resources to upgrade the supply buildings in the first four zones to maximum first. Therefore, I do not feel I have been set back that much. In the long term, expanding to Molten Ashlands is important for army size. More building capacity allows for more taverns/etc. It would also give access to Ancient Ruins. Do they exist though? I have not seen any at all.

I have several small armies scouting Molten Ashlands searching portal stones so when the time comes, I can get my Molten Ashlands village up relatively quick. A side benefit of massive scouting, is that if you hit all knowledge obelisks, you can advance your research levels by a lot. Here is where I am for you to gauge:

In order to curb the power of the Ragnarök alliance, I went looking for allies and have now joined the Roman Empire alliance. Initially, I had planned to solo PVE mostly through the game, but it seems like there is a lot of PVP action still to come. The Ragnarök alliance is dominating at present, so I ask of all of you, please rise up against the evil empire! Do not be oppressed!

Lord of Ultima: Warehouse City Layout

Here is my Warehouse Layout which you can see in the LoU Flash City Planner.

Please note saved links can be bugged from time to time (currently is) for Chrome, so if you get a blank city with Chrome, use another browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Storage: 14,575,000 wood/stone/iron/food
Shipping Capacity: 7,400 carts and 240 merchant ships

With the Ascension patch, processing of resources, that is, purification, should be done in your resource/military farm cities. There is simply too much volume to ship it to a warehouse city to process, especially with the increased military city farm rates (due to unit travel speed and unit combat strength research). You also do not need to balance out your resources like you did for moonstone creation. It is better to put in one moonglow tower in your resource/military farm city then have multiple marketplaces.

Therefore, central processing, that is, the moonstone creation function of a warehouse city is gone. However, warehouse cities are still very important. Here are the remaining functions of a warehouse city:
  • To store resources for when they are needed, for example, new city builds or war supply.
  • To ship resources to support new continent builds/invasions.
  • To consolidate food for feeding your armies.
    •  Here is what I do during city maintenance. I go to a warehouse city serving a cluster of military cities, and request excess food from positive food military cities and food resource cities. Then, as I go through checking each military city, I request food as applicable from the warehouse city. I find this technique a lot quicker then shipping directly between cities, as you need to match/look a lot more then.

My design logic is:
  • The storage available is a good amount but not overly high. You should not be storing an excessive amount of resources, as if you do, you are not being efficient. In general, most resources should be used as soon as they are produced.
  • If you do get excessive resources somehow, the moonglow tower allows for purification of them.
  • The City guard house is there to recruit city guard for defense.
  • There is a food cluster to feed your city guard. There are times whereby you might ship all the food out unintentionally, so this prevents starvation.
  • There is no trinsic temple as I normally recruit barons in paladin military cities. It is a lot faster there anyhow. If I do have to send barons to another continent, I have a few paladin military cities on water with harbours to allow that. However, if you do not have that situation, and do want a trinsic temple in your warehouse city, you can always drop a marketplace for a trinsic temple.
  • You might notice there is a much higher shipping capacity here then in other warehouse cities you might have seen. You will find it is very useful to have such a high shipping capacity as you can pretty much do all your shipping in one go, as opposed over several hours, waiting for carts to come back.

For towers, I recommend:
  • Lookout tower x2 to give 21 hours of attack advanced warning. I find 1 tower/11 hours is not enough.
  • The remaining 22 towers depend on whatever defensive troops you have. For me personally, I use Ballista towers as my alliance has full continent control, so no one is there to plunder me from within the continent. Thus, Ballista towers are there in case someone decides to plunder from offshore, which is very rare anyhow.

Aloriah: Midgard Progress Update #3

Well, I hit #1, whee! :) I have been pushing my civilization size, so that is not lagging behind so much, but I still need to push on. There are people in Molten Ashlands already.
I do not think I will stay at #1 for that long as I think the Ragnarök alliance is going to move on me soon. Hence, I need to focus on defense a bit. Make love not war people please.

This is my first defense of my Misty Marshes village. As you can see, it was a hard fought battle which I nearly lost. I have included details to show you how much harder the zone is.
The main reasons for it being so hard was that I did not have enough Bear Riders, so had to rely on Bersekers a bit and Moroose (Warrior) did not have the 'Protective' skill. The latter was pretty much a mistake. I have now remedied both issues (have 1500+ Bear Riders at the least) and reset my skills to pick up the 'Protective' skill. Defense now is pretty much solid, with me taking minimal losses. At times, I wish that Emerald Dragons would spawn/attack more, so I get more scenario points.

Dry Steppes is still the best zone to farm scenario points. The reasons for being in Misty Marshes is more for income increase and chance of better items. Here is something the Emerald Dragons dropped, to whet your appetite:

Congruent with my strategy of having my Treasure Hunter in the hardest zone I can survive in, I have moved Guzzer (Magician) to Misty Islands. However, it is important for non-combat specialized heroes to avoid mobs in Misty Islands as even if you have a lot of troops and win battles, you take big losses. I learnt this the hard way by promptly losing 600 Bear Riders. You need to do a lot of micromanagement. I presume this will apply in Molten Ashlands too.

In Dry Steppes, I have recruited my 4th hero Dipps (Warrior) who joins Coram (Warrior), my other Dragon Hunter. My rate of scenario point farming has gone up a bit now. When it is time to expand to Molten Ashlands, I will reset Dipp's skills to pick up appropriate skills like Fire Resistance and send him.

I am preparing for my Molten Ashslands expansion by:

  • Building up a large army of Trolls. I think Trolls are the best units for Molten Ashlands given they do water damage which Ruby Dragons are not resistant to.
  • Given Trolls need gold to recruit, I have been focusing on taking gold mines.
  • Sending small armies to scout and secure portal stones.

Lord of Ultima: Overall Strategies

There are two main overall strategies for Lord of Ultima:
  1. The traditional resource city build to support your few castles. There is a large ratio of resource cities to military cities.
  2. Military cities (castles preferably) with food city support that raid dungeons for resources. You build resource cities at the start of the game to get your military cities going. When you get to the middle/end game, you stop building resource cities, and only build military and food cities. There is a large ratio of military cities to resource cities.
Strategy #1, the resource city build, is extremely popular. You can tell this from the huge number of complaints when the Ascension patch changed how resource nodes worked. There were complaints from not only new players but high-end/experienced players. For me, the resource node change had little to no impact at all.

I am a big proponent of strategy #2, the military city build. The advantages are:
  • The resource generation from military city dungeon farming can yield a lot more then resource cities. The Ascension research improvements (unit travel speed and unit combat strength) makes military city farming even more lucrative.
  • It gives you more overall military to call on, and in the end game, military power is king.

The disadvantages are:
  • You do need to buy the War Minister so your dungeon raids run 24x7. Not a bad thing anyhow in my opinion.
  • It takes a lot more work as you have to check more, ie, recruit replacement troops, set up new raids after dungeon abandonment, etc. You can't just build and forget like you do for resource cities.
  • You need continent control to make this strategy effective as castled military cities provide a lot more TS per city and thus, can farm more.

If you do have the time and energy, I encourage you to try the military city strategy. If executed well, it is a vastly superior strategy, yielding tremendously more resources. A lot of people are surprised at how much you can get from dungeon raids.

I am on world #9 and here are some relevant rankings to prove my point. As you can see from the following screen shots, the military city strategy works!

In order to allow me to achieve such, my alliance (The Dark Ministry) established continent control on 31 first, then 21:
  • 31 is where most of us started, and this was done diplomatically by merging all the other small alliances into us.
  • On 21, we killed every enemy castle and took control of the continent via force.

Aloriah: Midgard Progress Update #2

Things continue to go well, and I am now at 2nd spot.

My Black Dragon farmer Coram (Level 33 Warrior) continues to farm Black Dragons like crazy in Dry Steppes, propelling me upwards. I feel like my civilization size is lacking, but I think that is mostly due to me starting later. I have not stopped building in any of my villages and ensured the sacrificial blessings are always active. Nevertheless, I will focus even harder on civilization build so that I will still be competitive in the end game.

Moving my Treasure Hunter Guzzer (Level 24 Magician) from Tropical Islands to Dry Steppes has been fruitful. Here is the best item he has found so far:

I have seen a bit of pvp now as more people are settling into Dry Steppes and intruding into my neighborhood. Therefore, I have been rather busy defending my turf. I generally like to leave my fellow Alorians alone so if people could give me a wide berth, that would be great.

The Guzzer empire now has expanded to the Misty Marshes! The brave Moroose (Level 33 Warrior) and settlers navigated themselves around all the big bad monsters to get to the new village. Here is an action shot of the landing and settlement:

Moroose was rewarded for his bravery by getting the following item from a treasure chest along the way:

The following preparations have been made for village defense in the Misty Marshes:
  • Blue Dragon Head to minimize attacks.
  • Moat.
  • Poison tower x2.
  • Level 2 Bear Riders (unit with poison resistance).
  • 'Tough' specialization (+25 life, +10 poison resistance) for the Bear Riders.
  • Bear Ride damage type changed to fire as Emerald Dragons are poison resistant.
  • Hero (Moroose) with poison resistance skill.
  • Poison resistance item for Moroose.
  • Still need to put some points in the Protective skill when Moroose levels up.

Emerald Dragons, bring it on! Well, I will probably get smashed but you got to try.

Pushing hard is key, so I have already dispatched scouts towards Molten Ashlands to claim portal stones which will come handy when it is time to expand into Molten Ashlands.

Lord of Ultima: Food Resource City Layout

With the Ascension patch, food is even more in demand due to purification so everyone is looking for food resource city layouts. Thus, here is my Food Resource City Layout which you can see in the LoU Flash City Planner.

Food Produced: 123,850 per hour
Storage: 4,375,000 food (full in every 1.47 days)/1,575,000 wood/stone/iron
Shipping Capacity: 1,200 carts

You may notice there are no lakes. This is an overlay layout for you to work with, depending on your lake placements. Any lakes you have will increase your production. I wanted to show you the base minimum production you will have at the very least. The design is for on water. I normally place all my food cities on water to free up much needed off water spots for castled military cities.

There is enough storage to ensure you do not max out everyday, in case you are busy. I have left 1200 carts in there so you are able to supply your military cities if needed, but the Moonglow Tower allows you to purify from within the city.

Aloriah: Treasure Hunting (Phat Loot)

I would like to start off this post with some cool items that I have found so far. Everyone likes to look at phat loot.

So dear readers, have you found any nice items also? If so, please leave a comment telling us.

At present, my first hero (a Magician) had been hanging out in Tropical Islands doing the following:
  • Killing Sapphire Dragons for scenario points.
  • Treasure hunting.

I think that was a mistake because:
  • Sapphire Dragons are rather hard to find as they keep moving. It is a lot easier to hunt Black Dragons in Dry Steppes. Sapphire Dragons are easy enough to kill for a hero-less army anyhow.
  • I think the better items come from the harder zones. Therefore, you should be hunting in the hardest zone you can survive in.

Therefore, I have 'Scroll of any Town Portal'ed to my Dry Steppes village. I have reset my hero skills (Go go Aloriah coins!) and re-planned my skill tree.
  • Relic Finder 12
  • Luck 9
  • Resource Collecting 9
  • Pathfinding 6
  • Runed Blood Ritual 6
  • Sharp-Eyed 6
  • Scientist 6 (default skill for a Magician)

Is this the correct strategy? Only time will tell. Wish me luck!

Lord of Ultima: Paladin Military City Layout

Here is my Paladin Military City Layout which you can see in the LoU Flash City Planner.

Max Units: 92,000
Recruitment Speed: 10s
Storage: 2,975,000 wood/stone/iron/food
Food Produced: 28,035 per hour (will vary depending on your particular lake placement)
Food Required: 57,500 per hour
Food Deficit: 29,465 per hour (need to restock every 4.2 days)

Similar to my Berserker Military City design, this is not the biggest troop strength city or fastest training speed military city around. It is meant to be a balanced/functional city which you can roll out many of. A Paladin Military City has the following purposes:
  • Defense, particularly against Mages/Warlocks.
  • Dungeon farmer. Paladins are one of the best farmers out there due to their high loot capacity.

As per my Food Management strategy, there are 3 food clusters. This allows you to let restock every 4 days. You can even go out on the weekend!

The Moonglow Tower allows you to purify resources within the city, so you will never any lose due to excess. I have left the 4 Marketplaces in there, as at times, you will need to ship resources out, for example, to build new cities.

If you look carefully, you will see a lone Hideout. This is for plunder defense. If for some reason whereby you cannot defend against a plunder that will take all your food, the Hideout will hold just enough food to prevent troop starvation before you ship in more/trigger an artifact.

This design assumes you do not place the city on water and have continent control, so the city never gets damaged. That is why there are no cottages to help rebuild speed. It is not so bad anyhow, as with the Ascension patch, you can research into Construction Speed Bonus.

For towers, I use:
  • Lookout Tower x2 to give 21 hours of attack advanced warning. I find 1 tower/11 hours is not enough.
  • Ballista Tower x22 as the most risk is someone catapulting your city. This is also useful if you do have to place your city on water due to lack of room.

  • As best described by the creators of the game:
"Lord of Ultima is EA’s first game in the free Strategy MMO genre and is completely playable in a web browser. Developed by EA’s Phenomic studio, the game’s creator Volker Wertich (the genius behind strategy classics such as the Settlers) takes this genre to the next level. Lord of Ultima features deep strategic gameplay and multiple social features including an advanced trading system, alliance features, online chat, and forums. At launch it will be available in English and German language.
